I AM PROUD

Old movies I watch Indians and cowboys.

Indians made to look ignorant.

The sadness I feel to see this and know,

others see this and believe their eyes,

not knowing the truth. Spiritual, proud,
and majestic....they stood.

They wept, saddened by the injustice.

They lost everything, their land, their hearts, their identity.

They survived,
I AM PROUD!

The Hunter

Once while deep in The Amazon
I watched the hunters dance
with raised arms they spun in circles
chanting hunting songs deep from their gut.

Dancing to build trust in their abilities
there was no time to wallow in doubt
as a small gourd cup was passed around
filled and refilled with a magical hunting potion.

The potions scientific name belongs in parentheses
right behind the Indian name, Chi Chi Doro
written somewhere on the sketch pad of my colorful past
that's been unplugged and left motionless for too long.

The fire they built burned through the night
hunters dance and chant and wave their arms
women sit and watch in anticipation of the feast to come
no one seems to mind me being here.

Dawn lights the way for the hunters
carefully they make their way into the jungle
poisoned arrow waiting in leather sheaths
on the backs of the brave men who wear them.

Spears and blow guns held securely
sights have been set and goals reached
the men return slowly to the village
burdened by the weight of the kill.

Women prepare the feast for the tribe
men and children bathe down in the river
I sit and write about what I saw
the air is filled with the aroma of fresh meat cooking.

Blind Justice

A tailor brought the class action suit
when the baker said he kneaded the dough
they called in a farmer out standing in his field
and a traveler who wanted some place to go
the fisherman wasn't the only one who went to sea
a candle maker was standing there in the light
the doctor, the lawyer and street walker
were also there to share that night.

No one ever though it'd go this far
after all it was all based on hear say
the farmer couldn't produce evidence
not even to this day.
But never the less it only takes one
rotten apple to spoil the bunch
I thought it was wrong but what could I do
all I really had was a hunch.

I watched as they took him off to jail
another young man falsely accused
she sat there with a smile on her face
everyone knew she enjoyed being used
the judge said "this case is closed".
I sat there quietly on my hands
it was another case of blind justice
I'll never understand.

Hat Creek Calling

The Rippling of the water gently rolling by
Speaks to the feelings of a voice deep inside.

A crying of an Osprey as he flies to his nest
Plays upon your heartstrings and gives a tug
to your breast.

A row of geese parading on a bank of velvet green
Talking to each other, stopping only just to preen.

Summer storm is brewing on the whisper of a breeze
Makes you stop and feel the wonder and give thanks
upon your knees.

IF I KNEW

If I knew it would be the last time That I'd see you
fall asleep, I would tuck you in more tightly and
pray the Lord, your soul to keep.

If I knew it would be the last time that I see you walk
out the door, I would give you a hug and kiss and call
you back for one more.

If I knew it would be the last time I'd hear your voice
lifted up in praise, I would video tape each action
and word, so I could play them back day after day.

If I knew it would be the last time, I could spare an
extra minute to stop and say "I love you," instead of
assuming you would KNOW I do.

If I knew it would be the last time I would be there
to share your day, Well I'm sure you'll have so many
more, so I can let just let this one slip away.

For surely there's always tomorrow to make up for an
oversight, and we always get a second chance to make
everything just right.

There will always be another day to say "I love you,"
And certainly there's another chance to say our
"Anything I can do?"

But just in case I might be wrong, and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you and I hope
we never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone, young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance you get to hold
your loved one tight.

So if you're waiting for tomorrow, why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes, you'll surely regret the day,

That you didn't take that extra time for a smile, a hug,
or a kiss and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today, and whisper
in their ear, Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear

Take time to say "I'm sorry," "Please forgive me,"
"Thank you," or "It's okay." And if tomorrow
never comes, you'll have no regrets about today.

QUICKSILVER LIGHTNING

There were warm spring weeks
swimming in coconut ice cream
when it rained colored candy sprinkles

There were fourths of July
baseballs of helium
sailing into the sun
served up like apple pie

There were mud puddles
sandy hair
sprinklers full of rainbows
drenching us in mischief
on the lawns of our lives

We were acrobats
Olympic stars, water ballerinas
pirouetting along plush carpet
through the halls of time

But quicksilver lightning
burned up the ground
left us crippled
flags were left
tatters in the wind

One by one, our dreams blew by
in silence we watched the time-
elapsed, silver gelatin film
turn us grey
one summer
